XYZ is Not Only the End of the Alphabet…

XYZ was going to be the name of a supergroup (group formed by members who were famous in other bands or as solo artists). The name is derived from the words ex-Yes and Zeppelin. The members of XYZ were: Jimmy Page (ex guitarist of Led Zeppelin), Chris Squire (ex-singer and bass player of Yes) and Alan White (ex-drummer of Yes). Jimmy Page invited Robert Plant, his former teammate of Led Zeppelin, to join XYZ as their lead singer, Plant even came to a rehearsal of the band in 1981 but he said that he did not want to join them because he disliked the complexity of the progressive rock of XYZ. After the rejection of Robert Plant, the project completely fell apart.

Several bootleg tracks (recordings of performances that were not officially released by the artists) of XYZ appeared in the 1990’s. These bootlegs were recorded in the home studio of Chris Squire on New Pipers, Virginia Water, Surrey in April of 1981. The bootleg includes “Telephone Secrets” and “And (Do) You Believe It” and two instrumental songs. Chris Squire and Alan White formed a group called Cinema with Toby Kaye and Trevor Rabin. Jimmy Page became a successful and demanded studio guitarist and solo guitarist.
