Gretchen Renée Wilson is an American country singer. She was born in Pocahontas, IL. on June 26th, 1973. She has been very successful in her career; in fact she won a Grammy Award and her album debut reached the position number two on the Billboard 200 chart. Pocahontas is a little town of only 700 inhabitants. When Gretchen was born her mother was only 16 years old and her father left them. She grew up in penury and she and her mother was constantly moving in several trailer parks. Her mother got a job as waitress in a little restaurant while she was at the school.

But when Gretchen was 14 she left the school and started to work in a bar as bartender. When she was 15 she already lived alone and for her 20 years she was the singer of two bar bands. In 1996 she moved to Nashville to start her singer career. There, she was discovered by John Rich in 2000 who was formerly a member of Lonestar and he asked her that she write songs for him. Sometime later she began to sing with an informal country music group called “MuzikMafia”.

By 2003 Gretchen signed a contract to Epic Records and on May 2004 released her debut record entitled “Here for the Party” which contains the single “Redneck Woman” that rapidly became a hit single reaching the position number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.

That same year the same disc was launched outside the US and reached the number two position of the Australian chart and on July 2004 the single “Redneck Woman” was chosen as the best country music song of the year according to the US, Australia and UK charts. Last year Gretchen released her second album named “All Jacked Up”.
