Luis Fonsi was born in Puerto Rico on April 5, 1978. Luis Fonsi and his family moved to Orlando, Florida when he was 10. During his childhood he dreamt about becoming a member of Menudo, arguably Latin America's most famous boy band in history, and he started hanging out with other youngsters interested in pop music. While in high school, Fonsi sang jingles for Orlando Radio and participated in several local boy bands, one of those was Big Guys where he tagged along with future *NSYNC member Joey Fatone.

After high school, instead of pursuing stardom with a boy band, Fonsi decided to attend the prestigious music school of Florida State University (still he recorded demo tapes in Miami). There he studied theory, harmony, voice and composition; he even got the chance to go on tour in England with the university choir. While he attended FSU he was offered a contract with a large recording company after a music department president heard him sing.

In 1998, Fonsi released his debut album Comenzare (I Will Begin) which swiftly became a hit in Latin America and his home country Puerto Rico. His sophomore effort, Eterno, was as successful as its predecessor (it peaked at number six in the Latin charts), and Fonsi had already conquered the European markets becoming a celebrity in Spain. While Fonsi worked on his next album, a re-mix of his first two albums was released in 2001. The following year he released the album Amor Secreto along with his first full length album in English, Fight the Feeling, in 2002 also. His crossover album was not well received, and suffered of low sales. In 2003, Fonsi launched his album, Abrazar la Vida (Holding on to Life), under Universal’s Spanish music label. Fonsi launched his following record in 2005, Paso a Paso, which explored diverse rhythms and arrangements and was able to debut in second position on the Top Latin Albums chart.
