The Postal Service is an indietronic (music genre known for combining indie rock and shoegaze with elements of electronic music) band that features Ben Gibbard (lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie) and producer Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel) of Figurine and Headset. Many songs of Give Up, their first LP, feature vocal collaborations of Jenny Lewis (solo artist and lead singer of Rilo Kiley) and indie rock musician Jen Wood. The sounds that this band combines are reminiscent of the new wave music of the 1980’s.

This band began to work together when Ben Gibbard sang in a track of the Life is Full of Possibilities album of Dntel (Jimmy Tamborello). The song is called “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan.” This song was included in an album of remixes that features artists such as: Superpitcher, Barbara Morgenstern, Safety Scissors, the Flaming Lips and Lali Puna. “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan” was the most acclaimed song of the album and the two artists joined forces. These two artists lived far away from each other; they were not able to work together in person but they managed to come true. Jimmy Tamborello created beats and mailed them to Ben Giddard who edited them placing his melodies over the tracks and mailing them back, he wrote the lyrics only when the tracks were completed. This process of creating music helped them come up with The Postal Service name.
