As mentioned above, he was born in Poteet but he grew up in Pearsall, TX. When he was 8 years old his parents divorced and he and his brother remained with his father. When he was in the high school he started to play with a rock band but he suddenly discovered his preference for country music. He was influenced by the music of singers such as: George Jones, Hank Williams and others. He enrolled in the university but suddenly escaped to Mexico with his love Norma and then they married in a little church in Texas.

By 1971 he enlisted in the US Army and during his stay there he played with a band. When he was stationed with his wife in Hawaii they had their first child. When Strait left the Army (1975) he got back to the Southwest Texas University and he graduated in 1979 with a degree in agriculture. After that he started to play with a band named “Ace in the Hole” in Huntsville and Houston. Then he went to Nashville, TN where he signed to MCA records. In 1981 his wife received their second child named George Jr.

Today he lives with his son George, but sadly his daughter Jennifer was killed in a traffic accident in 1986 when she was only 13 years old. Among the years 1981 and 2005 Strait released 33 records.
